Gray Oral Reading Tests-5

J. Lee Wiederholt, Ph.D.
Brian R. Bryant, Ph.D.

The widely used GORT-5 tests have been recently revised and renormed. The GORT–5 tests provide an objective measure of oral reading and growth for individuals between the ages of 6 and 23.  Results aid in the diagnosis of oral reading difficulties and can be used to measure change in oral reading levels over time.

Improvements over the GORT-5 tests include:

  • New normative data were collected from 2008-2010
  • Norms were extended upwards to age 23 years, 11 months
  • Basal and ceiling rules were streamlined to make administration easier and more efficient
  • Comprehension questions were completely revised, and studies were provided to show that the items are passage dependent
  • Reliability and validity studies were added
  • The overall look of the test was updated

The GORT-5 tests has two equivalent forms, Form A and Form B. Each form contains 16 developmentally sequenced reading passages with five comprehension questions each. An optional miscue analysis system allows reading specialists to analyze reading errors and tailor interventions to specific students' needs.
